Churches are strange places. Not so different from their own temples in a lot of ways, especially the ones with colorful artwork worked into everything including the windows, but more than foreign enough to make Osiris feel unwelcome within their walls. His very existence never feels like more of a challenge to the modern status quo than when he's standing in a church.
But the time has come for Osiris to seek out information that even Thoth doesn't know, and Emmanuel's taciturn nature makes him a poor candidate for teacher - besides, he's got his hands more than full enough at the moment. Priests and pastors are, as far as Osiris knows, generally quite happy to be asked in-depth questions about their faith, so he doesn't anticipate any trouble in finding another who will be better suited to the task.
Only the familiar, creeping discomfort as he walks among the pews and tilts his head up at a stained glass portrait of a serene face encircled by feathered wings and wonders what connection, if any, all of this has to do with him and the power he used to wield.
Churches are strange places. Almost liminal when they're empty (or nearly empty), almost commercial in the way a grocery store or shopping mall (do those even still exist?) is when they're full of people. Potentially creepy or a place that feels like a warm sanctuary. There are so many variables that make them such interesting places! Lucas likes them when they're like this: mostly empty, perhaps a couple of people meandering about. It's nice.
Well, it's nice until something weird walks in. Something with an oppressive presence (perhaps inadvertently). Something that radiates the kind of discomfort at being here that can't help but draw Lucas' attention.
Slipping into the main aisle between the pews, Lucas simply walks up the Osiris with a welcoming smile. "Been a while, huh?" There. A way to address the awkwardness by offering this person the excuse of having not been to church for a while. Or, probably ever in this case.
Ah. So the alien feeling he carries with him in a place like this also shows externally, does it? That's a bit disconcerting, though he's not exactly surprised.
As for the man currently approaching him, his easy smile and warm voice match up with what Osiris has been led to expect from the leaders of modern Christian churches, which does help him to relax somewhat. Is this the leader of the church? He has no outward markers of being a priest, but Emmanuel also dressed casually when they met so Osiris isn't making assumptions in either direction.
"I've never made a habit of visiting, I'm afraid," Osiris admits. "But I'd like to remedy my ignorance when it comes to your faith."
Maybe it would be less noticeable to a common human. Lucas senses it because he is what he is. There's a familiar feeling to this stranger, but also a very foreign one.
"Are you a writer?" There's no judgement in the question. It's just that a lot of folks with questions about the faith tend to be researching for a book. At least, that's been Lucas' experience.
"Ah - no," Osiris says, struggling for a moment with how to explain himself before offering a small, helpless smile. "I'm not sure my reasons would make sense to you even if I tried to explain. Are they something you need to understand?"
And there's always the issue of respect. Osiris wasn't exactly happy about having to explain the nature of rising and falling religions to Emmanuel, and it's something he'd rather not repeat with another man of the faith.
(( It was all arranged, as requested to be suit all parties involved. Lucas sent the word back to Lucifer that Osiris agreed to meet him and the location the ancient god chose. Because so much of the communication in arranging the meeting was indirect, it took more time than any of them would prefer. But it's finally happening.
Lucas isn't exactly happy to be involved this directly with Lucifer's side of things but... Well, he can't just sit back and let things happen, can he? He's grateful Osiris had the wisdom to keep this meeting out of the heart of the city. It's already suffering from all the rancid vibes. At least at this abandoned place, it's less likely anyone will notice a little more decay.
The angel gets their first, a good hour before the appointed time. Somehow he's been deemed the neutral party in all this (how???). So Lucas takes it upon himself to ensure the place is truly empty, that someone isn't loitering who's uninvolved. To ensure no spies are present or traps being laid. There's a part of him that wants to trust Lucifer's word, but... it's also Lucifer so... When he's satisfied that this meeting will be held in good faith, he shoots a text to Osiris to let him know. ))
[Osiris and Emmanuel arrive early as well, and Osiris has never missed his godly form more than in that moment. He feels microscopic striding into that abandoned lot full of decommissioned vehicles and machinery with nothing but his impressive aura to protect himself and Emmanuel if the conversation goes south. If Lucifer promised him new abilities and greater strength to face his brother, would Osiris take up with him the way Set did? In fact, is that exactly what he's doing now?
No, he has an angel and a priest on his side here. They'll be on the lookout for Lucifer's brand of trickery and ensure that Osiris doesn't make any bad deals. That's probably why Emmanuel insisted on coming, Osiris belatedly realizes - because Lucifer's cunning is a greater risk to them than his brute strength.
Despite being an expression Osiris has never used before, it feels apt when it rings through his mind this time: thank God for Emmanuel.]
Hello again, Lucas. [Osiris gives the angel a respectful nod of his head, then gestures to the man beside him:] This is Father Emmanuel Yoon. Emmanuel, this is the angel I told you about.
[The two of them make a striking pair, both dressed in black from head to toe; Osiris has donned a full formal suit with a silk scarf tied in a bow at his neck in place of the tie, and he wears a crisp new pair of leather gloves on his hands. From what he's seen of the modern human world, he thinks he should look reasonably imposing.]
(( The angel smiles and waves in greeting to Osiris and Emmanuel. He met the priest briefly when Lucas tried to change his mind about coming here. Osiris was right about him: he's stubborn! Even an Angel of the Lord couldn't convince him to even consider not coming. Lucas is equal parts impressed and not. ))
We've met~!
(( Lucas did try, Osiris! He really did!
Emmanuel simply nods in greeting, his face an impassive mask. Much like with any monsters he faces, the priest feels its best to stay as calm and collected as possible. He can gush over the very shocking religious experience he's having later. Privately to his friends (Osiris, Horus, possibly Anubis). For the time being, he stays close to Osiris, slightly to one side and a half step behind him. The god is the one doing whatever negotiations are happening here, not him.
A few minutes before the appointed time the lamp lights flicker (Lucas sighs!) and a sort of fog seems to accumulate at a distance. No, not fog. Smoke? Opaque black clouds carrying the scent of burning and ash with them and an oppressive aura of pure evil. From it, two physically unimposing figures emerge before it slowly fades away. The first, a young man with a fox-like face and a grin. Unlike everyone else here, he's in a pair of loose jeans and a t-shirt that reads "I'm here to shake shit up" with a Boston shaker on it. Behind him, a shorter, more flamboyantly dressed man with an equally laid back expression (though he's not quite grinning). The ombre red and black suit makes Lucifer stand out against the black smoke before it's gone. As he draws closer, he slips his hands out of his pockets as if to show he's not hiding anything. Once he stops, he doesn't try to hide how his eyes sweep over each person present. ))
[When that distant fog first starts to accumulate, Osiris's spine goes ramrod straight and he stumbles a step back with panic written all over his face - they've been sold out, he thinks, mistaking it for the first stages of a storm. But then the smell reaches his nostrils, shot through with an oppressively bleak feeling that seems to sink right into his skin and hollow out his heart, and he finds he's able to stand upright again. As miserable as the energy may feel now that these two have arrived, at least they're not Set.
He's not sure what he expected, but Osiris still finds himself singularly unsurprised by Lucifer based on what information he does have. The oppressive aura, the attractive face and theatrical manner: this is someone Set would never be able to resist. Even the lingering looks and unnecessarily flirtatious comment remind Osiris of his brother in the most unflattering of ways.]
Lucifer, I presume. [Despite the wholly negative first impression, Osiris keeps his tone and expression impassive.] I am Osiris, lord of Duat.
(( Osiris isn't the only one who has a poor initial response to the appearance of Hell's representatives. To Emmanuel, it's like the temperature changed drastically and the air pressure grew crushing. It feels hard to breathe, making him lightheaded and darkening his vision for a second. Until he felt Osiris step back. That pulled the priest's focus back and he steeled himself against the oppressive air.
Unlike Osiris' "second" for this meeting (duel?), Wolf stays ahead of his master, closely watching everyone and sparing a sneer at Lucas. But it's the devil who speaks. ))
I know you, Osiris, Lord of Duat. (( Not personally, of course. Lucifer never met any of the gods who came before his in any meaningful way. Having noted the reactions of the two (is that a human Osiris brought with him? Ha!), he gives the ancient god another obvious once over before wetting his lips. )) Not nearly as well as I know your treacherous brother.
[Anubis didn't think this part through, which is frustrating because he thought SO MANY things through. He's got Kebechet watching over Duat and Apis guarding the scales. He's dressed appropriately to blend in with humans and has his smartphone with him since that's the way most people communicate on this side. He even made sure to find out where Osiris is staying... but Osiris isn't there.
Good thing he also found out the name of the hotel where Horus and Emmanuel... were staying until about two days ago.
Then, as a last resort, he went to Sobek's apartment... to find that he's moved as well.
So now Anubis is well and truly stranded. He could go to his mother and aunt, but there's no way he's turning himself in before he can ascertain that Horus is alright. He winds up wandering the decrepit city core in a way that feels random, too distracted to notice the faint tug at his godly aura drawing him closer to a specific hotel.]
(( There is a lot going on lately! With plans laid but only in the very early steps of being implemented, it's much easier for Lucas to notice the aura of yet another ancient god in the area. This place is already suffering thanks to the alliance between Lucifer and Set. Lucas is doing what he can to counteract some of it, but there's only so much he's permitted before... Well, it could be a problem for him.
Some of the Egyptian gods' cover has begun to arrive. They can't have all the demons and yokai and angels and whatever other big aura'd monsters are around descend all at once. That might be too suspicious. So they're filtering in, corralled to a specif place under the guise of some sort of convention (to better explain the influx of strangers). This particular god seems to be heading in that direction do.
Lucas is quick to intercept him, so he can determine whether this new one is friend or foe. Trotting up beside Anubis on the street, Lucas look like your average human. Jeans, t-shirt, jacket over it, hands in pockets, friendly smile. ))
[Friend or foe? Hopefully the sheer depth of Anubis's confusion will give friend vibes, because he'd be the most unprepared foe in history. His awareness is being downright assaulted by all the various powerful auras pressing in on his own, most of which he's never felt before in his life, and the man who approaches him is no different - not a god, but something more than the human he appears to be.]
... convention? [Anubis rubs at his temples in a weak attempt to clear his head.] I'm, uh - mostly just very, very lost. This place doesn't look like I expected and no one's where I thought I'd find them.
[So not a very threatening or hostile presence, all in all. In fact, Anubis looks like he might be close to tears. He does have the aura of death around him like Osiris, being a permanent resident of Duat until this very day, but that's as dark as this puppy's energy gets.]
(( Poor puppy! He really looks hopelessly and miserably lost. It tugs at Lucas's heart strings. His smile fades, but his friendly expression remains. ))
[Boy, that would be an extremely fortunate coincidence... unless this being can feel Anubis the same way Anubis can feel him and recognizes what he is, in which case it's the best luck he's had in eons. Worth a try!]
Well, there's my cousins Ho - Harris, Harris Koiak, and Seb Casau. Or Harris's dad, he'd work too, his name's Asa.
[Last Anubis checked, they were still using their human cover names. Here's hoping this guy knows them.]
Yeah well one of the Egyptians just invited me to go to the outdoor pool with them And now I'm out here with three topless gods and regretting my entire life

"I dropped so many hints!!!" was definitely involved in the finding out
i can see from all my eyes
david being a dumb about angels is now canon
Horus is Archangel, Osiris is Seraphim, I'm probably Samael
[He doesn't know Emmanuel well enough to ascribe any of these to him yet - so far Fallen Angel seems closest but that's an unfortunate coincidence.]
I love that, tbh.
